How to Install a Ceiling Fan
There are different approaches on how to install a ceiling fan, I suggest before you start to mount your ceiling fan or do the electrical wiring, ensure there is enough clearance to accommodate a ceiling fan. A minimum of 24" should be between the end of the blade and any obstructions for maximum efficiency and there should be at least a minimum of 7' from the floor to the bottom of the ceiling fan blades. Most ceiling fans can be installed using the same electrical box that a standard light fixture uses. If your ceiling fan has a light kit, ensure the circuit can handle the extra load capacity. If the load is to much you will have to run a new circuit with a new circuit breaker from the main service panel to the outlet. Note: If you are unsure on the specifics of how to install a ceiling fan or the wiring involved consider hiring a professional electrician.
Once you have determined the breaker is suitable for your ceiling fan turn off the power to the lights circuit breaker and remove the light. Next make sure the junction box is made of metal, and most municipal codes only allow a 4” junction box, so confirm with your local building inspector. The box must also be securely fastened to the joist, it is very important that the junction box is fastened securely to hold the additional weight (at least 50lbs.) and the movement of a ceiling fan. You may need to cut a larger opening and secure a 2x4 between the joists for additional support, or if you can find a patented support it will save you from cutting a larger hole.
Finally assemble the ceiling fan as per the manufacturer’s instructions. It may be a good idea to install the blades so you know exactly how it will mount on the ceiling before you actually secure it. Most manufacturers provide detailed instructions to complete the installation.
